Loddon Valley Football League Club Bears Lagoon Serpentine have moved to squash rumours that have swept through Central Victorian Football circles that the future of the Club was in doubt.

Bears Lagoon Coach Steve Cox who returns for his second stint in the role was disappointed in the talk ” I obviously don’t know where the rumours started although we keep hearing about it,  but there is no truth in them at all, we don’t appear to have any real issues and the Club is financially stable”.

The rumours ranged from the Bears being in financial difficulty to a mass player walkout although the former Harding Medalist who will play on again this Season was keen to go on record to say the claims were false.

Asked if the Club had lost any major sponsors which had been speculated Cox said” Nothing has been brought to my attention and as far as I know all of our Sponsors have committed to come on-board again this year, so the whole box and dice at the Club is going along well”.

The Club has secured the services of Eaglehawk youngster Brad Lewis and Heathcote Premiership player Damien King. The pair are set to provide Serpentine a brilliant rucking combination with both athletic type players.

King participated in Heathcote’s training camp last weekend although he informed Saints Coach Brent Chapman this week that he would continue his Football with Bears-Lagoon.

2009 Best & Fairest Josh Hutton has been high on the shopping list of a number of Clubs in the area although Cox was excited to announce the Bears trump card would stay on ”We sat down with him and asked what we could do to keep him at the Club, and we were able to tick all those boxes and he will be our Club Captain this year and he is 100% committed to the Club for 12 months”.

Another local talent in Andy Gladman who has spent the past two Seasons with Kangaroo Flat is also on the Bears radar although Cox explained that Gladman was taking some time to make his final decision. The Club’s vacant Assistant Coaching position is Gladman’s should he wish to pursue it.

Asked of the Club’s expectations for the Season ahead and Cox indicated the Club would be looking for significant improvement on last years Wooden Spoon finish ” Like most other Club’s we will be aiming to play or else there isn’t much point in playing although we know that we have alot of ground to make up and hopefully we can atleast win a few more games than last season”.

Bears Lagoon will have Practice Matches against Elmore on Sunday, March 14th, Avoca @ Avoca on Friday, March 19th while a match against Dunnolly is also in the wings.
