New Colbinabbin Leader hopes to be a shining light

CENTRAL VIC FOOTY HAD THE PLEASURE OF CATCHING UP WITH NEW COLBINABBIN ASSISTANT COACH NICK KNIGHT FOR A CHAT THAT WAS OFTEN LIGHT HEARTED

You’ve been keen to get yourself an interview on here for a while now Nick and I’ve finally agreed so hopefully you can provide Central Vic readers with some insightful stuff.

yes!

Ok here goes. You spent time with the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC cup as a Junior how many games did you play with PIOS and how do you describe that experience?

I played about 14 games with the pioneers, I found it to be a great experience being able to play alongside players that are making a name for themselves now in the A.F.L.

Since progressing into open age football you have played with your home club of Rochester which included being part of the runners-up team of 2002 and played with the South Bendigo Bloods. It would puzzle some that you have chosen to play HDFL football at the age of 23 explain your motivation for joining the Grasshoppers?

Originally was going to play another season at Rochy. I started pre-season under the new reign of Lenny Schmidt but about 4-5 weeks into training i didn’t have the same passion as previous years gone by. this was an individual thing rather than anything to do with rochy or the people involved with the footy club. Funky (Brent Millar) rang me and asked me if i was interested in an assistant coaching role with colbo. i found the position to be very exciting and challenging especially with some of the players that left the club, Lock, Brown, Pinniger, Dishon just to name a few.

Also part of my motivation is the possible return of my brother Luke who is fresh off a Premiership at Longwood seems set to go back to Elmore,  hopefully bluey will give him the green light against us round 6!

I’m sure it’s a match up we would all like to see! It’s early in your Colbinabbin journey and some would the Grasshoppers have played two teams who won’t see September in North and Broadford but have you found the Heathcote League brand of football to date?

I think the Heathcote League can be scrappy footy at times but more often than not the skill level and the hardness at the ball and player are very, very, good.

And the Assistant Coach role at Colbinabbin what have been your areas of input/responsibility? And how are you enjoying the role?

I help out with selection and training. I try and work into training some of the stuff i learned while playing under David Williams at Rochy. The way he taught the game was second to none and if i can try and teach some of the stuff he taught than hopefully we will be a better side for it. to date i am loving the role of assistant coach under funky,

Do you see it as a pathway into a Senior Coaching role in years to come?

Definitely. Hopefully when the time is right and the right opportunity a rises than i would love to have a crack at coaching at a senior level. Dunnolly I’m waiting for your call!

Finally what does Nick Knight get up to in his recreation time?

I’m glad you asked troy. Currently I am doing a course by correspondence involving dog washing at tafe. When I do get enough time I absolutely love long walks on the beach sipping a Pena colarda and occasionally playing Frisbee with Simon Austin and Deon Jones.

I thought as much. Good Luck to Nick and the Colbinabbin Grasshoppers are they strive for the 2008 Premiership Cup.
