Those BFL pundits who were quick to dismiss the South Bendigo Bloods as a legitimate Premiership contender in the lead up to the season were forced to re-think following last nights thumping 69 point victory over Eaglehawk.
The polished Bloods were far too efficient in all areas of the game for Hawks with their ball movement often fluent throughout the night with a large band of contributors on hand.
It was a super start for the Bloods in front of a bumper crowd with 1st gamer Rory Alexander converting with a long bomb outside 50 to set the scene for the enthusiastic Bloods outfit.
An ankle injury to new comer Brad Fawcett did little to affect the Bloods as hard nuts Ricky Coburn and Julian Lake steamed in at the contest to force the Hawks on the back foot.
Early season form! Julian Lake turned in a strong first up performance.
Aaron Connaughton put a touch of class on the contest with two goals a series slick disposals as he along with the hard running Gavin Bowles and Neville Clark who also chimed in with two first term goals did as they pleased.
Zippy Eaglehawk youngster Brady Threllfall with 8 possessions for the first term along with veteran Coach Derek Filo and Tim Nicolson battled manfully against the odds for the Borough although they were faced with 38 point deficit.
The 2nd quarter would bring more of the same as Jackson Ireland, Brady Childs and Brad Wright would work the Bloods forward while running power of Michael Leech from defence was on show to ensure South put a stranglehold on the match.
The Hawks open forward line did little to help as Leigh Rees was able to match Balraj Singh and winners at ground level were no where to be seen. The margin at the main break was the matches greatest at 71 points as Eaglehawk were left to lament how dramatically their fortunes have faded since holding the last two BFL cups aloft.
To their credit the competitive spirit of the Eaglehawk side come to the fore in the final half as Derek Filo continued to accumulate possessions through the midfield, young ruckman Brad Lewis came into the game while dual Premiership player Luke Button provided some great drive as the Hawks outscored South 3.1 to 2.3 for the term.
Despite being challenged by Coach Ricky Coburn to keep the foot to the floor in the last term the fizz had gone from the game somewhat in the last term. Players from both sides able to find space to dispose of the ball from although scoring still remained limited as both teams strayed shots at goal.

The final margin of 69 points would give a true reflection of a game that had a long list of positives for the Bloods. Aaron Connaughton looked in tip top touch through the midfield, Rory Alexander promises to be a find for the Bloods across half forward, Justin Schubert adds another strong body in the defensive half, Michael Leech has re-captured the form the that him the talk of the competition early last season while Jackson Ireland showed what an important player he could be for South with the ability to impact in all three areas of the ground.
For Eaglehawk they appear somewhat flat at present with the reliance of their stars to perform overwhelming at present although it is quite possible that they have played the two top teams of season 2009 in the opening fortnight. Ryan Threlfall has impressed with his speed and balance through the midfield while Brodie Filo, Brady Herdman and Jarrod Findlay are all capable of leading the Hawks to brighter days.
South Bendigo will head to Country Vet Oval next weekend for an early season blockbuster against the Bulldogs with the winner to assume to tag of Premiership favourite while Eaglehawk will need to combat the Strathfieldsaye show which will be a buzzing after their victorious start today.
