Kangaroo Flat FC BFL Season 2009 Preview.
By Ben Jones.
The BFL 2008 season saw the Kangaroos come on in leaps and bounds after a lean patch that had seen very few wins in the previous 6 seasons out at Dower Park. A new coach, plenty of new faces, and fresh enthusiasm saw the Flat go within a whisker of playing off in September action, and there was no doubt their form in the second half of the season would have greatly pleased Daryl Wilson, and also had a few sides above them looking over there shoulder this season.
If pre-season talk and movement on the recruiting front are anything to go by, Kangaroo Flat are in no hurry to go back to the dark days. When Central Vic Footy caught up with triple Colbinabbin premiership and Bendigo Bombers Reserves coach Daryl Wilson, he appeared quietly confident that his 2nd year in charge could be a highly successful one.
When pressed on what he would consider a pass mark for 2009, Wilson claimed that his club was “ We’re aiming to play finals, that is our goal. We didn’t set that last year, but considering where I think we are at now, we’d be very disappointed if we didn’t play finals football”.

Tyrone Downie who joined the Roos from the Barooga Football Club was an instant hit last year being crowned Kangaroo Flat’s Best & Fairest.
A player who only featured in last half of the season in ‘08’ for the Roo’s who can be considered one of there better recruits, and one that Flat supporters will be licking their lips in anticipation of seeing in action, and that is young Justin Maddern. Maddern will be looking to build on his tally of 48 goals in just the 8 games. A versatile player who can play tall or small and just about anywhere on the park, the former Bendigo Bomber will be a key to the Flats fortunes as they push for finals footy this season. With Tyrone Downie and Andrew Gladman along side Maddern, they look set to form a very potent forward line, potentially one of the most dangerous in the BFL.

There is also plenty of promise from within the club’s junior ranks. Wilson nominates players such as Ash Benbow, Mitch Holt, Ryan McNish and Tim Brooks who he says have now had a couple of senior pre-seasons under there belt, and are more aware of the demands and expectations placed on them as senior footballers.

Young Gun! Ryan McNish is one player striving towards consistency in 2009.
Former Bomber Grant Ford has also been another very handy pick up for Wilson with the ability to play at either end of the ground, while all involved at Dower Park will be desperately hoping former Sydney defender Rohan Warfe who has taken a role working with the Western Bulldogs coaching staff returns in the latter part of the season to qualify for finals.
It has been a long and searching pre-season for Wilson’s men, who kicked off their campaign way back on November 12th. Numbers have been strong throughout according to Wilson, and the sessions have been overseen by former umpire Berris Fitch, who has placed a strong emphasis on hard running over summer. So you can expect to see a very fit Flat side running out in Round 1.
Pre-season matches have seen Kangaroo Flat take on Ovens and Murray side Yarrawonga, as Wilson was looking for the strongest possible hitout for his young side. Whilst going down by 15 points,
The Flat next come up against Charlton this Friday night under lights at Dower Park, which will be there final hit out before the real stuff kicks off in just a fortnights time.
Knowing Daryl Wilson like I do, Id expect nothing less than a finals berth for his side in 2009, and despite the strength of the top 4 as noted by Wilson (G.Square, Gisborne, Eaglehawk and Sth.Bendigo) It would not be at all surprised to see the Flat earn a double chance come the end of August.
After such a tough run in previous seasons, there’s plenty to like out at
Likely Finish- 3rd-4th
